Black Clover: Sub or Dub?
A named opening-volume review gives a reason to try English if Asta’s shouting is a barrier. Compare Yuno and the ensemble too.
Try Black Clover's English dub if Asta's early shouting is the barrier keeping you from the series. A published comparison specifically favored Dallas Reid's delivery while acknowledging that it remained loud. Choose Japanese if hearing Gakuto Kajiwara's Asta is your priority; volume alone is too narrow a test for the ensemble.
Which anime and cast?
Funimation's 2017 television-dub announcement names Dallas Reid as Asta and Micah Solusod as Yuno. Cris George directs that dub, with Bonny Clinkenbeard writing the script. ANN's encyclopedia credits Gakuto Kajiwara as Asta and Nobunaga Shimazaki as Yuno in Japanese. The English announcement and series credits identify the production discussed here.
This guide assesses the television series that began in 2017. ANN separately reported an October 3, 2026 debut announcement for the returning anime. The early review below cannot establish a verdict on that new production's performances or its release schedule. The return announcement keeps those scopes distinct.
Asta: a sourced reason to try English
Reviewing Season One Part One for Anime UK News, N.E.C found Reid's Asta less irritating to listen to, while stressing that he was still loud. The reviewer also praised the supporting voice cast's range of personalities and described the English dub as well done. These are judgments about the opening ten episodes on that reviewed release. The review supplies that comparison.
The useful recommendation is conditional. If shouting is the thing that makes you stop, try the alternative performance before deciding that the entire show cannot work for you. If shouting is part of the appeal, the same description may point you toward the Japanese track. The reviewer is describing a response to delivery, rather than proving that one actor is more skilled.
Yuno and the wider cast
The same review finds Yuno's reserved delivery gives little impression of his personality in those early episodes. That observation complicates a comparison centered only on Asta. Lower volume does not by itself make a character more expressive, and a lead who attracts attention is only one part of a conversation.
Sample Asta and Yuno together, then try an exchange with the supporting cast. Ask whether the contrast makes the characters clearer to you or merely leaves one dominating your attention. Do you remember what the quieter speaker contributes? That is a more useful test than measuring how often either track raises its voice.
Comedy, emotion and quotations
A trial should include an ordinary exchange and a moment of pressure. Judge whether the comic manner remains appealing when the intention changes, and whether spoken English helps you notice expressions. These are questions for your sample, not claims that either cast fails at a particular scene. An opening-volume review also cannot certify how a performance develops over a long run.
For an English-first viewer troubled by early Asta, the attributed comparison makes the dub a practical first trial. For a viewer interested in Kajiwara, Japanese remains the direct route to that performance. Use the watch order independently of the language decision. Keep any quotation tied to its episode and track; cast credits establish who performs a role, not the exact sentence they deliver.
