Comparing Manga Trim Sizes

Compare checked manga dimensions without confusing page width, spine thickness and complete shelf space.

Last updated October 8, 2026

Compare the stated trim size of the exact manga edition being considered. A collected book can be taller or wider than a single, but the word collected does not specify a size. Use the publisher’s dimensions for a first comparison and the physical copy for any tight fit.

Three checked products

Publisher-listed trim sizes in inches, checked October 8, 2026. These are not measurements of complete shelf runs.
ProductTrim sizeFormat
Fullmetal Alchemist single 15 × 7½Paperback
Fullmetal Edition 15¾ × 8¼Hardcover
Death Note Black Edition 15⅝ × 8⁷⁄₁₆Paperback

The Fullmetal hardcover’s listed width and height each exceed those of standard 1 by three quarters of an inch. That is arithmetic on the two records, not a measurement of a physical copy or proof that the hardcover contains precisely the same story material as the single. Black Edition 1 provides another named paperback size, rather than evidence that every collected paperback uses one common trim.

Check height, depth and thickness separately

Measure the usable space where the books will stand, including any shelf lip or obstruction. For a bag, compare the actual compartment opening as well as its interior. A nominal width and height can help eliminate an unsuitable option; they do not supply the book’s thickness or the room needed to remove it comfortably.

For a full collection, do not multiply a trim width by the number of books to estimate shelf width. Trim width describes a page’s horizontal extent, while upright shelf occupancy depends on spine thickness. Ask for actual spine measurements when that distinction controls the purchase. Page count alone does not supply paper thickness, cover thickness or binding allowance.

Size does not settle reading quality

A taller page can be a reader’s preference. The table does not establish that any panel has been enlarged by a particular percentage, that the lettering is clearer, or that one binding opens more easily. Those would require inspecting the intended edition. The practical choice here is narrower: which named format meets the available space and the reader’s size preference.

A counterargument is that checking fractions of an inch can be excessive when a shelf has ample room. In that situation, the dimensions can remain a secondary consideration. They become useful when a reader is replacing smaller books with a larger edition, carrying one book regularly, or buying for a shelf with a fixed clearance.

The Fullmetal Alchemist guide and Death Note guide answer the separate questions of contents and collecting routes. Choose an edition’s material first, then use its listed dimensions to test the physical plan.
