Fullmetal Alchemist Manga Buying Guide: Singles, 3-in-1, Hardcover or Box
The four VIZ print routes for Fullmetal Alchemist compared: standard paperbacks, 3-in-1 omnibuses, Fullmetal Edition hardcovers and the Complete Box Set, with list prices and who each suits.
VIZ publishes Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist in English in four print routes, and all four carry the same complete story: 27 standard paperbacks, 9 three-in-one omnibuses, 18 Fullmetal Edition hardcovers, and a Complete Box Set. The box is not a fifth edition. It holds the 27 standard paperbacks. So the real choice is between three formats, with the box as a way of buying one of them.
The four routes at list price
| Route | Books | Format | US list each | Whole story at list |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard paperbacks | 27 | Paperback, 5 × 7½ in. | $11.99 | $323.73 |
| 3-in-1 Edition | 9 | Paperback, 5 × 7½ in. | $16.99 | $152.91 |
| Fullmetal Edition | 18 | Hardcover, 5¾ × 8¼ in. | $25.00 | $450.00 |
| Complete Box Set | 1 box of 27 | The standard paperbacks, boxed | $289.99 | $289.99 |
Prices are VIZ’s US list prices, rechecked on October 7, 2026 for the first and last standard and Fullmetal Edition books, all nine omnibuses and the box; VIZ marks them “Actual prices may vary,” and retail offers and stock differ. Trim sizes are as VIZ lists them. A larger page is more page area; it says nothing about paper, binding or print quality.
Standard paperbacks: one book at a time
The 27 singles came out between May 3, 2005 and December 20, 2011, at 192 to 208 pages each. At $11.99, Volume 1 is the lowest-priced single book in any of the four routes, but all 27 come to $323.73 at list, more than either the box or the omnibuses. The Fullmetal Alchemist manga catalog lists every ISBN.
3-in-1 Edition: the lowest list price for the whole story
Each omnibus collects three consecutive standard volumes, so omnibus 1 holds Vols. 1–3 and omnibus 9 holds Vols. 25–27. The number on the spine is therefore not the standard volume number: VIZ’s 3-in-1 Vol. 6 listing says it “Contains Volumes 16, 17 and 18!” The books run 568 to 576 pages and were published from June 7, 2011 to November 11, 2014. At $152.91 for all 9, the omnibus route costs $170.82 less than the singles at list, and VIZ describes omnibus 9 as the final volume of the series. A reader who already owns some singles can pick up at the matching omnibus, but only at a multiple of three: after standard Vol. 6, omnibus 3 is the next book; after Vol. 7, it repeats one book already owned.
Fullmetal Edition: hardcovers with their own numbering
The 18 hardcovers were published between May 8, 2018 and August 23, 2022. VIZ lists each at $25.00 and 5¾ × 8¼ inches, and calls Vol. 18 the final volume. Page counts run from 256 to 360, with Vol. 18 the longest at 360. The whole set lists at $450.00, $126.27 more than the singles.
The hardcover breaks do not always line up with the paperbacks, and they are not a tidy one-and-a-half paperbacks per hardcover. An Indianapolis Public Library staff list annotates Fullmetal Edition 6 as chapters 31–36, while standard Vol. 9 runs chapters 34–37 in our catalog, so six hardcovers stop partway through the ninth paperback. Anyone moving between this edition and the paperbacks partway through should switch at a chapter, not a spine number; the edition-switching guide sets out the checked crossover points. This guide does not claim which extras, color pages or wording differ between the hardcovers and the paperbacks.
Complete Box Set: the singles in a box, with extras
The VIZ box listing says it includes volumes 1–27, the novel Fullmetal Alchemist: The Ties That Bind and a full-color, two-sided poster. It was released November 1, 2011, totals 5,248 pages and lists at $289.99. The same listing advertises “Over a 20% savings over buying the individual volumes!” without saying which prices that compares. At the list prices VIZ shows today, the 27 singles total $323.73, so the box saves $33.74, about 10 percent. That is still the cheaper way to buy the singles format whole, and the novel and poster come with it, but the omnibus route costs $137.08 less again. The box does not contain the Fullmetal Edition hardcovers.
Who each route suits
- Trying it first: standard Vol. 1 at $11.99, or 3-in-1 Vol. 1 at $16.99 for three volumes’ worth.
- Buying the whole story for the least at list: the 9 omnibuses, $152.91.
- Wanting the singles format complete, plus the novel and poster: the Complete Box Set.
- Wanting hardcovers at a larger trim: the Fullmetal Edition, the most expensive route at $450.00.
