Death Note Manga Buying Guide: Singles, Black Edition, All-in-One or Box
Compare four ways to own Death Note’s twelve-volume main story, with a Black Edition overlap table and the box’s extra book explained.
Choose Death Note by how you want to own the main story: separate volumes, paired volumes, or everything in one binding. The main story has twelve volumes. The box is a way to buy the singles with a reference book; counting that extra as a thirteenth installment will send you looking for a continuation that the box does not promise.
Four ways to buy the main story
| Route | What it contains | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Singles | Twelve separate main-story books | Try the opening or fill individual gaps |
| Black Edition | Six books, two story volumes per book | Collect pairs without buying the whole run at once |
| All-in-One | All twelve volumes in one 2,400-page paperback | Choose one binding for the whole main story |
| Complete Box Set | Volumes 1–12, How to Read, and a How to Use It fold-out | Choose separate story books plus the reference guide |
The contents of the Complete Box Set distinguish the narrative volumes from How to Read. You can therefore compare the box against twelve singles for story coverage while deciding separately whether the reference guide and fold-out matter to you. A complete main story is a narrower purchase than every book carrying the Death Note name.
Black Edition numbers count pairs
| Black Edition book | Story coverage |
|---|---|
| Black 1 | Standard Volumes 1–2 |
| Black 2 | Standard Volumes 3–4 |
| Black 3 | Standard Volumes 5–6 |
| Black 4 | Standard Volumes 7–8 |
| Black 5 | Standard Volumes 9–10 |
| Black 6 | Standard Volumes 11–12 |
The Black Edition 3 listing is a useful test of the numbering: it collects standard 5 and 6, not standard 3. If you already own singles 1–4, Black 3 continues without repeating an owned story volume. If you own singles 1–5, the same purchase repeats 5 to add 6. That is a contents calculation, not a reason to replace books you already like.
Switching back works the same way. After Black 4, the next standard volume is 9. Do not search for single 5 merely because your latest collected spine says 4. Keep the last original volume you own in your shopping notes; it is the number that survives a format change.
One large binding or separate books?
VIZ’s All-in-One listing gives you the whole main story in one purchase. Its 2,400-page count describes how much is bound together. It does not answer whether you would enjoy holding or opening that particular book. If one binding is your priority, choose it on that basis; if lending, replacing, or carrying individual parts matters, favor singles or Black Edition instead.
For an undecided reader, single Volume 1 keeps the initial commitment to one story volume. Black 1 asks you to choose the opening pair. The box and All-in-One ask you to choose the complete story at once. A smaller first purchase can be sensible even if a larger bundle later has an attractive offer.
Before buying a used set
Ask for a photograph of every spine and confirm the edition name. For a Black Edition lot, compare its book numbers against the table above; for a box, confirm that its advertised reference book and fold-out are actually included. Treat missing extras separately from missing story volumes. Use the Death Note catalog to match the book, and the edition-switching guide when a shelf mixes formats.
