Fruits Basket Manga Buying Guide: Collector’s Edition, Box Set or Tokyopop

Yen Press’s twelve Collector’s Edition paperbacks and the 2025 box set against the out-of-print Tokyopop run, with checked ISBNs, Fruits Basket Another and what to read next.

Last updated October 7, 2026

Natsuki Takaya’s Fruits Basket has had two English print runs, and only one of them is a current publisher listing. Tokyopop published the original 23-volume English edition; Yen Press now publishes the complete story as twelve Collector’s Edition paperbacks, sold one at a time or together in a box set released in November 2025. So the choice is less between two current editions than between finishing a secondhand Tokyopop shelf and starting the Yen Press books, plus what to read once the twelfth book is done.

Two English editions of the same story

When Yen Press announced its license in December 2015, Anime News Network reported that “Tokyopop previously released the manga in English from 2004 to 2009” and that Yen Press would “release the 23-volume Fruits Basket manga series in 12 updated volumes based on the collector’s editions Hakusensha recently began releasing in Japan.” Yen Press’s own press release said the series would return to bookstores “having been out of print for nearly half a decade,” republished “with new translations.” By Yen Press’s account the Tokyopop books were already out of print in 2015, so a Tokyopop copy is a secondhand purchase, and its English is a different translation from the Yen Press text, not the same text in a different binding.

Anime News Network’s user-edited encyclopedia entry also lists six English “Ultimate Edition” books dated 2007 to 2010, with a seventh marked as delayed or canceled, and two fan books, Banquet and Fan Book - Cat. This guide has not checked their contents against either edition.

The Yen Press Collector’s Edition

Yen Press’s Collector’s Edition 1 listing describes the series returning “to print in gorgeous deluxe English-language omnibus editions with beautiful full-color illustrations.” Every one of the twelve is a paperback with a listed trim of 5.75 × 8.25 inches, all published between June 2016 and April 2017.

The twelfth book’s listing calls it the series’ “thrilling conclusion” and says that besides “the new translation and color illustrations this volume also contains over 150 pages of bonus material, including a never before published interview with Natsuki Takaya-sensei, character profiles, a timeline of the series”. Twelve books into 23 does not divide evenly, and Yen Press does not say which Tokyopop volumes each Collector’s book matches, so a reader switching from Tokyopop partway through should go by chapter, not by spine number. The edition-switching guide explains how to count that overlap. Our Collector’s Edition inventory carries the same ISBNs.

The Complete Box Set

The box set listing gives ISBN 9798855429985 and a release date of November 25, 2025, files the set under Yen Press’s Collector’s Edition series, and says the set “features not only brand-new covers, but a beautiful set of lenticular cards as well.” Its text promises Tohru’s story “from start to finish” but does not list the enclosed books by number or ISBN. The Complete Box entry and the box-set guide cover what to check before buying a set to fill gaps.

After the main story: Fruits Basket Another and the rest

Fruits Basket Another is the sequel. Yen Press’s Volume 2 listing says it is “set in the same world, years later,” and the first volume introduces a new lead, Sawa Mitoma. Yen Press lists four paperbacks:

Another 497819753617232022-12-13196

The numbering needs a note. The Volume 3 listing still tells readers not to “miss the grand finale of Fruits Basket Another,” but a fourth book followed in December 2022, and the Volume 4 listing says “the final chapter closes on the next generation of the Sohma family” and adds bonus comics by Takaya “printed in English for the very first time.” The sequel runs to four books in Yen Press’s listings.

Two other Yen Press items sit beside the manga. Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers Arc was released digitally: Anime News Network reported in April 2019 that Yen Press would publish it “as a digital simulpub,” and the first chapter’s listing calls it “the first of three new chapters” and warns that it “takes place around the same time as the last chapter of Fruits Basket.” Yen Press also sells Fruits Basket: Complete Anime Natsuki Takaya Illustrations, a 192-page paperback released December 12, 2023, which collects “illustrations inspired by each episode, along with commentary from the author.” It is an art book, not more story. One overlap is unresolved: the Another Volume 4 listing also promises “the idle banquet of the Three Musketeers” alongside bonus comics, but does not say whether that is the same three chapters, so this guide does not claim the arc is or is not in print.

Reading order and which books to buy

  • Trying the series: Collector’s Edition 1, the first book of the only English print edition Yen Press lists.
  • The whole main story: Collector’s 1–12, singly or in the Complete Box Set.
  • Finishing a Tokyopop shelf: possible only secondhand, and the Yen Press books use a new translation, so switching mid-run means a change of wording.
  • Afterward: The Three Musketeers Arc (digital) once the main story is finished, since it is set around the final chapter; then Fruits Basket Another 1–4.

The Fruits Basket manga catalog lists the Collector’s Edition and box-set ISBNs. For the anime, see the Fruits Basket watch order; this guide makes no claim about where any season stops in the manga.
