Chapters 39 to 42, and the reveal the first nine volumes were built to set up. The last chapter of this book is the largest single turn in the first half of the series. Whether it lands at all depends on the training flashback in Vol. 4, which is why that flashback exists. Two more of the cast turn out not to be who the reader was told they were, both inside the same four chapters. Season 2 covers chapters 35 to 51, so a viewer from the anime has seen it. Omnibus 4 collects Vols. 10 to 12, which is this reveal and the whole of its consequence in one book.

Chapter 42 is titled Warrior, and the title is the reveal: it is the word Marley uses for the program that produced these two, eleven volumes before the reader is told there is a Marley. Isayama's habit through the first half of the run is to name a thing accurately and let the name mean nothing yet. Ymir is the other quiet piece. She transforms to save Historia and becomes the character the series uses to ask what loyalty costs; her answer arrives by letter in Vol. 22. Rod Reiss is not named here, but Historia's parentage is, and it drives Vols. 13 to 17. The Japanese volume shipped on 9 April 2013.
