Season 2 ep. 26–37

The series acquires its real antagonist in chapters 35 to 38. The Beast Titan appears in the first of them, speaks, and commands other Titans; he is on the page briefly and he is the reason the next twenty volumes happen. Season 2 starts at chapter 35, the first chapter here, so a viewer who finished season 1 begins exactly at page one of this volume with nothing skipped. Box Set 3 collects Vols. 9 to 12 for $43.96 and covers chapters 35 to 50, which is almost precisely what season 2 adapts.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

Naming him is the spoiler, and the volume does not: Zeke is not identified until Vol. 21, and the gap between the reveal of the character and the reveal of who he is to Eren is one of the longest withholdings in the series. The rest of the book is the Wall Rose panic, which turns out to be a manufactured emergency, and Connie's village, where the houses are destroyed but no blood was spilled. That detail is the series' best-planted clue: Hange states the answer in Vol. 13 and it changes what every Titan in the first eight volumes was. The Japanese volume shipped on 7 December 2012.
