Season 2 ep. 26–37

Four chapters, 47 to 50, finish the Season 2 box set. The pursuit begun in the previous book ends, the walls hold, and the series answers a question it has been carrying since Vol. 2. It is a real ending, and a reader who stops here has a complete story about a walled city under siege. Season 2 covers chapters 35 to 51, one chapter past this book, so a viewer who finished it starts at Vol. 13 instead. Box Set 3 stops here with Vols. 9 to 12 for $43.96.

The Coordinate is the series' worst-kept structural secret and its best-timed one. Eren has carried the ability since the fall of Wall Maria, and the mechanism is not explained until Vol. 22, where it turns out to depend on a royal bloodline and on a Titan the reader first saw in Vol. 1. What holds the volume together instead is Ymir choosing to leave. The story frames it as a betrayal, and Vol. 22 reframes it as close to the only free choice she is ever allowed. The Japanese volume shipped on 9 December 2013.
