This is the volume of the Uprising arc that does the least, and that is worth saying before the purchase. Chapters 55 to 58 set a trap, lose it, and hand Eren and Historia to a man the reader has never met. Kenny Ackerman is the only reason to own the book on its own, and he does not do a great deal here either. Season 3 part 1 covers chapters 51 to 72, so a viewer has seen all of this, compressed. A reader working through Vols. 13 to 17 should expect this to be the slowest of the five. Omnibus 5 holds Vols. 13 to 15 for $19.99 against $32.97 as singles.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Kenny is the volume's actual investment. He arrives as a serial killer with a nickname and anti-personnel equipment, which is a neat inversion of the series' own hardware: gear designed to kill Titans turns out to be better at killing people. His connection to Levi is stated and left unexplained until Vol. 17. The political machinery around Rod Reiss is laid out at length. Isayama is taking credit here that he spends in Vols. 15 to 17. The Japanese volume shipped on 8 August 2014.
