Season 3 Part 1 ep. 38–49

Chapters 59 to 62, and the volume that rewrites the fourteen before it. Rod Reiss forces Eren's buried memories back, and what comes out of them makes every assumption about where Eren's power came from wrong. The detail belongs in the section below. The effect is that the series stops being the story of a boy who was in the wrong place. Season 3 part 1 covers chapters 51 to 72, so the anime has been through it. Omnibus 5 ends with this volume, collecting Vols. 13 to 15. Anyone who found Vol. 14 slow should know that this is the book it was paying for.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

The coup succeeds in the same volume, and the manner of it is the series' most cynical joke: Erwin's supporters spread a false report that Wall Rose has been breached, the nobility declines to protect anybody, and the army revolts over that rather than over any of the true things it already knew. The Grisha revelation is doing different work. It converts the premise from an accident into an inheritance, and it plants the Founding Titan and the royal bloodline, both of which govern everything that follows. Chapter 62 is titled Sin. The Japanese volume shipped on 9 December 2014.
