Season 3 Part 1 ep. 38–49

Chapters 63 to 66, and the first of five volumes that carry two English ISBNs. Wikipedia's chapter list records a separate special-edition ISBN for this book and the four after it, while Kodansha's own volume pages show only the standard paperback, so a search by title can return two different books. Check the ISBN rather than the cover. Inside, the cave sequence that Vols. 14 and 15 were building toward runs its course, and Eren picks up the ability the next five volumes are planned around. Season 3 part 1 covers chapters 51 to 72. Colossal Edition 4 and Omnibus 6 both begin at this volume, one of three points in the run where those editions cut together.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

Rod's transformation is the largest Titan in the series so far and the volume stages it as horror rather than combat, which is the right call, because nothing anyone can do to it matters. The argument underneath belongs to Historia. Offered the role of savior her father describes, she works out that no royal has ever stopped the Titans and refuses on that evidence. Eren's hardening, acquired by swallowing a vial in the last chapter, is the practical tool the Shiganshina campaign in Vols. 18 to 22 is built on. The Japanese volume shipped on 9 April 2015.
