Season 3 Part 2 ep. 50–59

Four chapters of one battle, 75 to 78, with no scene in them that is not the battle. A new weapon is introduced, used and answered inside the same four chapters, and that is the entire book. It is the least self-contained volume in the run and the clearest case against buying the Shiganshina campaign one book at a time. Season 3 part 2 covers chapters 73 to 90, so a viewer has seen it. Omnibus 7 starts here with Vols. 19 to 21 for $19.99, which is this battle and its consequences for less than the price of two singles.

The Thunder Spear is the series solving a problem it made for itself. Instead of having a character become strong enough to beat Reiner's armor, Isayama has an institution build a tool: the weapon is engineering, and it works the first time it is fired. That is this series' consistent answer to power, and it is why the Survey Corps reads as an army rather than a party of heroes. Bertolt's transformation on the last pages undoes the win immediately, which is the shape of the whole campaign. Every gain in Vols. 18 to 22 is charged for in the following chapter. The Japanese volume shipped on 8 April 2016.
