- Season 3 Part 2 ep. 50–59
Chapters 79 to 82 hold a scene this site quotes from twice. It is Erwin's last order to his recruits, and Levi's seven words to Erwin before it. Both lines are published here with their sources, so the words are not the surprise. What the decision costs is, and the section below has it. This is the turn the whole Shiganshina campaign is organized around, and the volume does not read on its own. Season 3 part 2 covers chapters 73 to 90, so a viewer has seen all of it. Colossal Edition 4 ends here with Vols. 16 to 20, and Box Set 5 holds this volume as one of Vols. 18 to 22.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The charge works as writing because Erwin is the one who has to be talked into it rather than the recruits. Our fact-check on Levi's seven words finds them genuine and finds the usual use of them backwards: Erwin is wavering between his dream of the basement and his duty, and the order releases him from the dream. The speech to the recruits is what he says once the wanting is gone. What the volume refuses is any sense of victory. Armin is burned to the edge of death in the same chapters, Erwin is mortally wounded, and Vol. 21 opens on which of the two receives the vial Kenny handed over in Vol. 17. The Japanese volume shipped on 9 August 2016.
