Chapters 31 to 34, and the cleanest stopping point in the first half of the series. Season 1 covers chapters 1 to 34 and stops exactly where this book stops, at the end of its last chapter, so a viewer who finished the anime's first season has seen everything up to here and starts at Vol. 9. It is the first of three season boundaries that land exactly on a volume edge; the others are Vol. 22 and Vol. 32. The Stohess arc closes, the question of who the Female Titan is gets its answer, and the last page opens a far larger one. Box Set 2 ends here as well, so Vols. 5 to 8 can be bought as one object for $43.96.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Annie's exposure is built out of the training flashback four volumes earlier, which is why that flashback exists. The crystal is the series refusing to give the reader the interrogation scene it has spent four volumes promising, and Annie does not speak again for a long time. What the volume actually leaves behind is the damaged wall: a Titan is visible inside the masonry, the characters are forbidden to ask about it, and the question of what the walls are made of governs everything up to Vol. 21. The final pages then break Wall Rose, which is where season 2 picks up. The Japanese volume shipped on 9 August 2012.
