Berserk Volume 36 continues the island crisis after the supposed refuge proves to be the sea god's domain. The publisher makes the Berserker Armor necessary to the group's prospects while emphasizing the danger of using it without Schierke's protection. This paperback ends Deluxe 12's collection of standard Volumes 34 through 36. The sea-god conflict continues in the description of Volume 37, so that hardcover boundary should not be treated as a completed encounter.

A group's strongest defense can become another threat if the support that makes it usable is missing. PRH specifically links Guts's risk of being lost in the armor to the absence of Schierke's protective influence. That keeps the problem concrete: his power is conditional on a relationship and a form of assistance, not merely his willingness to fight. The island leaves little space for avoiding the confrontation, which makes the condition harder to satisfy. Strength measured without the people required to sustain it is an incomplete account of what the party actually has.
