Berserk Volume 39 continues the attempt to reach Elfhelm and obtain help for Casca. The publisher places magical defenses in the way of reaching the hoped-for refuge, keeping the immediate journey unfinished at the outset. This paperback completes Deluxe 13's standard Volumes 37 through 39. Continue with standard Volume 40 or Deluxe 14 for the following material; the hardcover boundary alone does not establish whether the attempt to help Casca is complete.

The route to helping Casca ceases to be only geographical. PRH describes Schierke and Farnese entering her mind through the Corridor of Dreams, moving responsibility away from Guts's ability to transport or defend her. That is a meaningful change in who can act and what kind of action the problem requires. Their access makes them responsible participants in the attempt to help, without making Casca's experience their own. The argument is about limits: getting a person to a place where help is possible is an achievement, but it does not make the escort the person equipped to provide that help.
