Bleach Volume 3 opens with Kon living in Ichigo's room and a rain-soaked image of the river. The printed contents identify chapters 17–25; this analysis reads only the opening pages 7–17 of VIZ's licensed preview. The preceding books establish the household and the Mod Soul incident recalled here. Omnibus 1 contains this paperback's material with standard volumes 1 and 2, while Box Set 1 also overlaps it. The opening is not evidence of a stopping point at this book's end.

Ichigo's explanation of Kon's stuffed body gives the morning quarrel an ethical boundary. A living host would have its own soul forced out, so Ichigo and Rukia look elsewhere before discovering that a discarded toy can work. Preserving one being does not entitle them to displace another. Yet that principle does not turn the room into a kind household: Ichigo still handles Kon roughly, and Rukia kicks him while telling Ichigo to stop making noise. The distinction keeps the rescue from becoming a certificate of virtue. The comedy then breaks when Ichigo notices the date on his watch and falls silent. The rainy opening and that pause mark a change of register; these pages do not yet explain the memory behind it.
