Death Note 5 opens with Light confined while L watches for changes in the killings. Continue from the previous standard volume: the request for confinement belongs to an investigation already under way. The contents lists chapters 35 to 43. This is the fifth of the twelve main-story paperbacks, rather than Black Edition 5. The spoiler note examines what voluntary confinement can and cannot establish during the opening, and stops before the rest of this book’s investigation.

Light’s willingness to be confined looks like cooperation, but L considers the possibility of a plan prepared for exactly that situation. Soichiro then asks to leave the task force and be confined himself, fearing that personal feelings could overwhelm his judgment. His participation shows how Light’s proposed test imposes a cost on somebody else. When the killings stop, father and investigator still differ over what the pause establishes; L refuses to treat it as automatic proof. Light subsequently tells Ryuk to relinquish the notebook, and his own conviction about his innocence changes. The reader has seen a decision that the observer in the investigation cannot directly inspect. Honest certainty in the present therefore need not clear the conduct that produced it. This analysis reads only printed pages 7–19 of VIZ’s licensed English preview, including the opening confinement sequence. It does not report the later investigation or claim that volunteering for scrutiny proves innocence.

Lines from this volume
Spoiler — from the ending. Tap to reveal.
“Light, we're both murderers. We'll see each other again in hell.”
The line is a lie, delivered inside a staged execution built to test two suspects' reactions, and the machinery only works because the audience believes the father might mean it. L's plan needed someone Light could not read, and it used the one person whose morality Light had already cataloged as inflexible. The performance costs the father nothing except every assumption his son had about him.
