Editions and box sets

Compare the story coverage as well as the binding. Each edition has a page listing every book in it, with its ISBN and release date.

Black Edition

Six paperback books, two standard volumes each. Black 4 collects standard Vols. 7 and 8; its numbering does not match the singles.

6 books. The first:

All-in-One Edition

The complete 12-volume main story in one 2,400-page paperback. It repeats the story in the singles and Black Edition.

Complete Box Set

Standard Vols. 1–12, How to Read and a How to Use It fold-out. Thirteen books include a reference guide; Short Stories is separate.

How to Read

Supplementary reference guide with creator interviews and bonus manga. Already included in the Complete Box Set; not a thirteenth story volume.

Short Stories

Supplementary manga collection including C-Kira, a-Kira, the pilot chapter and pieces about L. Sold separately from the Complete Box Set.

Which edition to buy

Death Note ends in 12 standard volumes. Buy singles to fill gaps or try the beginning; six Black Edition books collect two volumes each. Black 4 contains standard Vols. 7 and 8, so switching formats changes the numbering and can duplicate books.

At the US list prices checked September 29, 2026, singles total $143.88, Black Edition $119.94 and the All-in-One $55.00. The last puts the main story in one 2,400-page paperback. Those totals establish cost, not reading comfort or binding quality.

The $139.99 box contains the 12 singles, How to Read and a How to Use It fold-out. Its thirteenth book is a reference guide, not another story volume. Choose it for separate books plus the guide; existing collectors should compare their missing singles. Short Stories is a separate supplementary collection, absent from the box inventory. Retail prices can differ. The supplementary-book buying guide compares How to Read and Short Stories using directly read samples; neither replaces the twelve-volume story.

What each edition costs
