Death Note 4 brings Light into the task force while the investigation confronts a possible second Kira. The paperback collects chapters 26–34; its opening turns an invitation to help into another test of the person being invited. The analysis below reads only the licensed preview, before that test or the wider case is resolved. Black Edition 2 also contains this standard volume, alongside Volume 3. Continue by the contents of the edition you own, rather than matching its spine number to a paperback.

Light receives access to the investigation by performing the reasoning his interrogator expects. L privately decides that identifying a second Kira could mostly clear him; Light then names that possibility, and Soichiro takes the answer as reassurance about his son. The inference is useful without being proof of innocence. Light’s private thoughts supply the counterexample: he wants inside information so he can reach the other Kira first. L also keeps knowledge of the second suspect separate from the initial invitation, making cooperation part of the examination. The opening therefore gives the same answer different uses: relief for a father, evidence for a detective and cover for a killer. This reading is bounded to printed pages 7–19 of VIZ’s licensed preview, within chapter 26. It does not claim that L has cleared Light or that joining the team ends his suspicion.
