Dragon Ball 1 opens with Goku living alone and Bulma searching for the objects that give the manga its name. The printed contents list chapters 1–11. This is the beginning of the original manga, before the English singles change title to Dragon Ball Z. VIZBIG 1 and continuous 3-in-1 book 1 both collect the first three singles; the complete Dragon Ball box holds the first sixteen. Buying a collection alongside this paperback repeats its opening. The analysis below concerns the licensed first chapter, not all eleven chapters in the volume.

Goku can lift Bulma’s car but cannot identify what it is. Strength makes the collision survivable without making his interpretation reliable: he mistakes the vehicle and its driver for monsters. Bulma supplies the explanation and the Dragon Radar that turns scattered objects into a possible journey. Her greater knowledge is not a guarantee of fairness. She asks for the ball Goku treats as his grandfather’s keepsake, tries an inducement when he refuses, then privately plans to conceal that the balls scatter after the wish. His refusal matters because he accepts the journey without surrendering the object. Their partnership begins with unequal knowledge and different motives, not instant agreement. The rescue from the flying creature supplies the counterexample to reading either character as merely a liability: Goku’s strength can protect the planner who needs it. This reading is bounded to VIZ’s licensed preview, printed pages 5–35, the first chapter.
