Dragon Ball 2 continues the search with a fire blocking access to the Ox King’s castle. The printed contents list Tales 12–24, the manga’s chapter labels. This is the original Dragon Ball run, before the English singles change title to Z. VIZBIG 1 and continuous 3-in-1 book 1 both include this second single; the original sixteen-volume box does too. The analysis below covers only Tale 12’s licensed opening, printed pages 7–19, not the entire paperback.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
An offered Dragon Ball makes helping the Ox King useful to the quest, though his initial death threat qualifies the bargain. Yamcha’s helpful behavior is more deceptive. On learning whose daughter Chi-Chi is, he seeks her out and excuses his earlier violence with a false claim of love. He still plans to steal the completed collection afterward. Goku takes Chi-Chi along at her father’s request; she mistakes his knowledge of her name for romantic interest. Their immediate cooperation needs neither shared wishes nor reliable explanations. Yamcha overhears Goku’s vulnerable tail while the journey continues, giving the deceit a practical consequence. One participant is already preparing to exploit the others.
