Dragon Ball 10 starts with Goku seeking the final Dragon Ball in a car the radar cannot detect. Tales 109–120 begin with a return encounter involving Pilaf, whose ambitions and preparations depend on earlier adventures. This is original Dragon Ball 10, separate from the later Z and Super numbering. The analysis follows the licensed opening through the proposed contest and the group's capsule preparations, without certifying who wins or when the wish is made.

Pilaf plans to seize Goku's tail and dismisses a subordinate's question about how he would govern the world as classified information. Preparation for domination has not produced a purpose he can explain. Goku arrives openly asking for the ball, then remembers that these people previously tried to kill him. Their shared interest in gathering the balls does not make their intentions alike. Pilaf offers to stake his ball against Goku's collection in a fight, and Goku accepts, confident of winning. The agreement is voluntary at this moment, but its fairness depends on facts Pilaf is hiding, including the tail plan. The opening ends as the capsules are thrown. It establishes the terms each side accepts and the advantage one side expects, before either is tested.
