Dragon Ball 9 opens after Goku has defeated the Red Ribbon Army, while his friends prepare an unnecessary rescue. Tales 97–108 continue his search for the remaining Dragon Ball, but the first chapter slows down to reunite the group. This is the original Dragon Ball paperback, not Dragon Ball Z 9 or Super 9. The reading covers the licensed opening through their return journey; the next search's result and later contests remain unread.

Yamcha wants a strategy before approaching the headquarters. Lunch fires wildly inside the aircraft, and Bulma orders it returned to capsule form, removing the vehicle around them. They are preparing for a danger Goku has already removed, and producing another one themselves. When he arrives, disbelief lasts until Pu'ar checks the damaged base. Goku has grown beyond their estimate of him, but still needs Bulma because the radar has broken and he cannot locate the last ball. His strength does not repair the tool. He also explains that the search is meant to restore Upa's father, rather than only recover his grandfather's keepsake. The opening makes the reunion more useful than another victory lap. The strongest person present still has unfinished work requiring someone else's skill.
