Frieren Vol. 7 opens with the first-class mage exam's interviews before Serie. The contents page lists chapters 58–67, but the analysis here stays within the preview of chapter 58, pages 5–18. This is a continuation of the exam, not a new starting point for the journey. The cataloged box contains only the earlier opening volumes and does not replace this book. Choose the numbered paperback when continuing a collection; nothing in this note establishes an anime-to-manga handoff.

Serie makes the exam look subjective without making it random. She offers Fern an apprenticeship, hints that refusing could affect her result, and then passes her anyway. Fern's loyalty does not cost her the qualification. Frieren has already predicted that Fern will pass regardless of her reply, while Serie hints otherwise. The pressure is real in the conversation, but the scene does not make loyalty an obstacle to success. The subsequent interviews test another assumption: Serie criticizes Denken's age, yet passes him when he admits that he briefly imagined fighting her. She also passes Ubel before Ubel has said a word. These decisions support a reading of the exam as a judgment of ambition and perception as well as competence. They do not establish a consistent rule that a candidate could follow. This analysis stops at page 18, during Wirbel's interview, before the chapter's conclusion.

Serie has asked Fern to be her apprentice, and Fern's first answer was "No way." Serie pressed: she would not mistreat her, and could help her reach heights no mage has reached before. Fern asked whether this affects whether she passes; Serie said "Possibly." This is Fern's final answer, and it contains no argument, only a statement of whom she already belongs to. Frieren had told her in advance that Serie would make a proposal and that she did not need to accept her demands, and predicted in the same breath that Fern would pass whatever she said, just as Frieren herself would fail whatever she said. Serie assumes the refusal was coached and passes her anyway, since she is not foolish enough to hold back a promising mage. So the answer costs Fern nothing in the exam. It commits her to something larger: turning down the examiner's offer, with her result apparently at stake, to stay with a teacher who expected to be failed by the same examiner.

Denken is an old man, and Serie opens his interview by listing his record: a self-made mage from a military family, now the most influential mage in the Northern Lands. She wishes she had met him young, when he still had energy and ambition; she is not interested in burned-out cinders. Or so she thought. The usual reading of this line is a tribute to Denken's fire. Look at what the second sentence rewards. On seeing her, he thought about how he would fight her. Denken says he gave up the thought immediately, and she passes him for having had it at all. The standard is her own supremacy: a candidate proves himself by imagining a fight with her, not by winning one or even starting one. That is an odd test for a mage exam, and a revealing one. Serie measures other mages by their distance from herself, and the compliment is mostly about the distance.
