Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 10 opens with a signal to begin an operation in Central. The licensed Yen Press digital preview starts chapter 38 and its contents lists chapters 38–41. This note reads only that opening passage, through printed page seventeen, rather than the later chapters advertised in the contents. The reading witness is a digital edition: it does not establish new chapter endpoints, page counts or production comparisons for the VIZ standard paperback listed here.

The operation starts with different people holding different amounts of information. Alphonse asks why no one told him what was happening, then chooses to join because the pursuit might lead to Hughes's killer. His feeling of responsibility gives the decision urgency without proving that he caused the death. Winry asks for a promise that he will return, while the opposing conversation treats the fugitives as subjects to be found and captured. On the street, a disguise and a knife offer one advantage until Hawkeye identifies the attacker. Her next opponent resists her bullets, making that successful recognition insufficient protection. Even Hayate's intervention interrupts the grip without ending the threat. The opening repeatedly changes what a useful action can accomplish: information enables a choice, recognition stops a trick, and intervention buys movement. None yet guarantees a safe return.
