Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 11 opens with Edward's father back in Resembool. The licensed Yen Press digital witness begins chapter 42 and lists chapters 42–45 in its contents. The checked opening moves from concern about Edward's absence to his encounter at his mother's grave. Later grave investigations and Scar chapters remain unread here. This digital sample supports the opening analysis below, while the VIZ standard paperback's physical details and blank chapter endpoints retain their separate evidential status.

Edward gives the burned house a meaning: it marks the brothers' resolve never to turn back. Hohenheim offers a much less flattering explanation, saying Edward destroyed a reminder of his mistake. The disagreement matters because the same act can carry determination and avoidance without either speaker having proved the whole motive. Edward also has a reason to reject this particular examiner. His father left the family, and the exchange repeatedly turns back to the hardship his mother endured. Hohenheim's criticism therefore arrives inside an unresolved failure of his own responsibility. The later domestic silence does not repair that failure. He looks at the sleeping Edward, notices the resemblance between them, and withdraws. The opening permits recognition without staging reconciliation: father and son can look alike while remaining unable to have the conversation Edward came prepared to resist.
