Standard Fullmetal Alchemist 3 brings the Elrics home for repairs and contains numbered chapters 9 to 12. The opening interrupts their search with work that alchemy cannot do for them: restoring damaged automail. This is the small VIZ paperback, also contained in the first 3-in-1 collection. Fullmetal Edition 3 is a different hardcover with different story boundaries. Read the preceding singles first; returning home is a continuation, not a new introduction to the brothers.

The homecoming makes the brothers dependent on someone whose labor their adventure keeps damaging. In the selected opening pages, Edward calls for Pinako’s help; Winry demands notice before maintenance visits and is furious at the smashed arm she made. Her welcome home and anger coexist. That combination gives her a claim on how he treats her work without reducing their relationship to a service contract. The thrown wrench also keeps the reunion from being an uncomplicated portrait of tenderness. Edward’s competence has not made him self-sufficient. This analysis uses only selected opening pages of the VIZ paperback in the public Internet Archive reader: printed 8–11 and 14–15. It does not evaluate the later library investigation or the separately listed side story.
