Fullmetal Alchemist 4 opens with Edward’s search for restoration meeting an immediate threat. Continue from the preceding volume: the laboratory confrontation is already in progress. The licensed English digital contents lists chapters 13 to 16 plus a separately labeled side story. This page identifies the standard VIZ paperback for buying, while the opening analysis uses Yen Press’s authorized digital preview. It assesses those displayed scenes rather than claiming a full paperback reading or identical wording between the English editions.

Edward’s demand for a new body interrupts Envy’s attack, but it does not put him in control of the exchange. Envy says he has seen something he should not have, threatens him, and then strikes when Edward reacts to an insult. Lust’s explanation for sparing him is more disturbing than an act of mercy: their plans require their human sacrifice alive. His survival serves somebody else’s purpose. The opening thus makes being needed a form of captivity rather than an assurance of being valued. The villains also discuss destroying the facility to remove evidence, while claiming that knowledge of the stone-making process alone will not help Edward. Their assertions describe the power they want to retain, not a neutral verdict on what he can eventually discover. This analysis reads only printed pages 7–17 of the Yen Press English Volume 4 preview on Google Books. It does not compare VIZ dialogue or report the laboratory’s later outcome.
