Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 5 belongs to the standard paperback run; the second checked 3-in-1 book already contains its material. Check that edition boundary before adding this single book to a collected set. This analysis uses pages 7–16 of Yen Press's authorized English digital Volume 5, whose contents list the numbered chapters and extras separately. It follows Winry and the brothers' arrival in Rush Valley. The reading does not compare VIZ paperback wording or review the later events in either edition.

Winry's delight in the engineering displays introduces Rush Valley as a place of professional possibility. The same streets also disclose why that possibility exists: fighting has expanded the demand for replacement limbs. A craftsman who loves the technology nevertheless hopes his trade will become less prosperous. The arm-wrestling spectacle sharpens that discomfort when a broken prosthesis immediately attracts competing repair offers. Ed then defeats the champion, but Al explains that he changed the opponent's arm into a weaker substance. Winry objects to the cheating. Winning therefore does not settle the question of good work. The engineers' later interest in the construction of Ed's own limbs gives Winry recognition on another basis, her craft, while the surrounding comedy keeps the enthusiasm tied to bodies that actually depend on that work.
