Season 2: Shibuya Incident ep. 30–47

The Shibuya Incident starts here, and it does not stop for six volumes. Chapters 80 to 88 return to the present, close the traitor subplot that has been running since Vol. 4, and then put a veil over a Tokyo station on 31 October with thousands of civilians inside it. Season 2's episodes 30 to 47 cover chapters 79 to 136, so a viewer who finished season 2 is six volumes past this one and starts at Vol. 16. For a reader, this is the cleanest place in the run to commit or stop: everything from here to Vol. 16 is one continuous event, and the volumes do not work apart.

The plan to seal Gojo was stated in Vol. 2. What the volume establishes before the fighting starts is the trap's design: the civilians trapped under the veil are manipulated into calling for Gojo, so the strongest sorcerer alive walks into a station alone, which is exactly what the plan requires. The traitor thread resolves first. Kokichi Muta, piloting Mechamaru from a body that cannot leave its room, made a deal to be healed and then immediately tried to warn the school, and he dies for it at the start of this volume. It is the series' habit in miniature: give a character a reason, let the reason be understandable, kill them anyway. The volume ends with the Prison Realm opened on Gojo. The next book is the one everything has been arranged for, and readers who buy this one alone will stop in the worst possible place.
