- Season 2: Shibuya Incident ep. 30–47
Nine chapters from the middle of one night, and not a book to buy on its own. Chapters 98 to 106 cut between six or seven separate fights across a sealed railway station, none of which begins or ends inside the covers. The Shibuya arc runs from Vol. 10 to Vol. 16 without a break, and this is its least self-contained volume: it is the stretch that reads as a crowd of skirmishes in weekly installments and as one continuous collapse when read in a sitting. Season 2 covers it, so an anime viewer starts at Vol. 16. Buy it with the volumes either side or not at all.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The set piece is Yuji against Choso, a curse who fights him to avenge brothers killed in Vol. 8 and breaks off mid-victory because he is hit with memories of Yuji as one of them. Nothing is explained here. The explanation arrives in Vol. 16 and the payoff in Vol. 29, and the series is content to leave a fight unfinished for seventeen volumes on the strength of one confused expression. Elsewhere Nanami saves Nobara from a curse user, Toji returns in a body that is not his, and Naobito Zen'in demonstrates why the clan is feared before the volume drops him into the next one's disaster. The honest assessment is that this book is connective tissue. What it does well is density: Akutami is running half a dozen threads through one location on one night, and the reason the arc is remembered as overwhelming rather than confusing is the bookkeeping done here.
