Season 3: The Culling Game Part 1 ep. 48–59

Chapters 143 to 152, and the volume that explains the rules the last third runs on. Nothing in it is a fight worth the price on its own. What it is instead is the briefing: what the Culling Game is, why Kenjaku started it, what he intends to do with Master Tengen, and what the sorcerers can do about it. It is 200 pages rather than the usual 192, and most of them are conversation. Season 3 covers it, so a viewer who finished that season starts at Vol. 21. A reader should buy it with Vol. 18 and treat the pair as the entry to the endgame.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

The Culling Game is a rule set: everyone with cursed energy is entered, points are earned by killing, and players with enough points may add rules of their own. That last clause is the whole of the next six volumes, because it converts a battle royale into a problem that can be solved by negotiation and arithmetic instead of by strength. Yuta Okkotsu, the protagonist of Vol. 0, is revealed here to have taken the executioner's role to protect Yuji, which is where that book stops being optional. Tengen explains that the man in Geto's body is Kenjaku and that the plan is to merge all of Japan with an immortal. The objection readers raise to this stretch is that the series stops to read out its own rules for a volume. The answer is that it never does it again: everything from Vol. 18 to Vol. 24 assumes the reader was paying attention here.
