- Season 3: The Culling Game Part 1 ep. 48–59
The series puts its protagonist on trial here, and the trial is the fight. Chapters 162 to 171 are largely one encounter: Higuruma's domain is a courtroom, his shikigami is a judge, and losing the argument means losing the right to use cursed energy at all. Yuji stands in it twice, the second time for the deaths in Shibuya, and what he says there is the closest the series comes to stating its own position on him. At 208 pages this is one of the longer standard volumes. Season 3 covers it, so an anime viewer starts at Vol. 21.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The first trial is a joke: Yuji is charged with entering a pachinko parlor underage, and he is guilty. The second is not. He asks for a retrial, is charged with every death Sukuna caused while wearing his body, and pleads guilty without hesitating. The sentence is death, and Higuruma cannot carry it out, because the verdict he has just obtained is one he does not believe. That is the series doing in one fight what the previous ten volumes did in aggregate: Yuji's position is that he is responsible, everyone else's position is that he is not, and neither side can produce an argument that settles it. It is also the best use the run ever makes of a domain. The rule set introduced in Vol. 17 exists so that this scene can be a legal proceeding rather than a brawl, which is a strange thing for a Jump series to build toward and the reason this volume is worth owning.
