Season 3: The Culling Game Part 1 ep. 48–59

Chapters 172 to 180, and the last volume season 3 covers in full. Two colonies run in parallel: Megumi finishes the fight that began in Vol. 19, and Yuta starts one in Sendai against three players who want different things from him. Season 3 adapted through chapter 181, the first chapter of Vol. 21, so a viewer who finished it has seen this entire book and one page-turn beyond it. For a reader, this is the middle of a stretch that runs from Vol. 18 to Vol. 22 and does not divide cleanly anywhere. Viz lists it at $11.99.

Reggie Star dies giving Megumi his points, which is the Culling Game's economy working exactly as Vol. 17 described: a fight ends in a transfer rather than a corpse, and the transfer is the objective. Then the Angel descends on Megumi, and that thread runs to Vol. 25. The Sendai half is Yuta against Takako Uro and Ryu Ishigori, and the argument in it is one the series has avoided until now. Uro tells Yuta that he will not get stronger while he fights for other people, and that every sorcerer at the top fights for himself. The series has spent twenty volumes on characters who fight for others and has killed most of them. It does not answer her, and Vol. 26 is arguably her evidence. Readers who treat the Culling Game as filler tend not to have noticed that its side characters are where the series keeps its philosophy in this stretch.
