This is the volume of the Culling Game that the run could most easily do without, and it is worth saying so before the purchase. Chapters 191 to 199 move to a colony in Sakurajima and spend most of their length on reincarnated sorcerers with single-minded obsessions, one devoted to swords and one to sumo. Maki is the reason to read it. Season 3 does not reach this book, so no viewer has seen it, and season 4 has no broadcast date. A reader working through Vols. 18 to 24 should expect this one to be the slowest of them. Viz lists it at 192 pages and $11.99.

What earns its place is Naoya Zen'in, who returns as a curse because he was not killed by cursed energy, which is a rule the series established long before it needed it. He is the clan's worst tendencies given a body and a speed technique, and Maki fights him with the Zen'in inheritance he believed was his. That fight is the end of a thread running back to Vol. 5, where the sisters fight, and through Vol. 17's chapters on what the clan does to the women born into it. Kenjaku's business in the same book is administrative: he takes the head seat of the Kamo clan using his identity as the original Noritoshi Kamo. The complaint readers make about this stretch is that the Culling Game keeps introducing people. The answer this volume gives is that the introductions are how Akutami retires his subplots, and it is not a satisfying answer.
