The finale stops for a comedy routine in this book, and the routine is a fight. Chapters 237 to 245 run two threads: Kashimo against Sukuna, which is the payoff to a character introduced in Vol. 21, and Kenjaku against a stand-up comedian whose technique turns on whether he finds something funny. The second is the strangest sequence in the run and the last light thing in it. Season 3 does not reach this volume. A reader in the middle of the Shinjuku fight should know that this is where the series pauses to be silly, and that the pause is deliberate rather than a lapse.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

Fumihiko Takaba's cursed technique makes whatever he finds funny become real, which means the most dangerous man in the series cannot injure someone who is not taking him seriously. Kenjaku, who has been unbeatable for twenty-five volumes and who killed Yuki Tsukumo in one, is reduced to doing bits. It is a genuine tonal break in the last act of a story about grief, and readers split on whether it is the run's best idea or its most self-indulgent. The Kashimo half is more conventional and does the necessary work: he asks Sukuna what strength is actually for, having waited four hundred years to ask, and gets no answer worth the wait. Sukuna restores his true form in the process, which matters mechanically for Vol. 28. A volume that is half joke and half setup is not the reason to buy the run, and it is the one place in the last six books where the series lets anyone breathe.
