- Season 1 ep. 1–24
Nothing much happens in the first half of this book, and the series knows it. Chapters 53 to 61 open with the tournament called off, the casualties counted and the students voting to settle the event with a baseball game, which is what the volume then delivers. The second half starts the Death Painting story that runs into Vol. 8. It is the last quiet stretch before the run's long middle, and it is the weakest of the first ten books. Season 1 covers it, so an anime viewer starts at Vol. 8.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The baseball chapters are doing one job, which is to make the Kyoto students likeable before the series needs the reader to care what happens to them. It works, and it costs a third of a volume. What follows is Megumi's stepsister Tsumiki turning up as the target of a curse tied to his old middle school, and that thread runs a very long way: Tsumiki is the reason Megumi enters the Culling Game in Vol. 17, and what she turns out to be in Vol. 24 is the pivot of the endgame. So the volume is a filler arc with a load-bearing beam through it, which is a fair description of a lot of Jump serialization and an unusually honest example. Readers buying singles can skip almost everything here and lose nothing. Readers who skip chapters 57 onward will not understand why Megumi behaves as he does for the rest of the run.
