Nana puts rebuilding a band beside a relationship losing attention. Osaki has former bandmates in Tokyo, while Komatsu faces an unsatisfying job and trouble with Shoji. This is a continuation for readers who already know what each woman hoped the move would achieve. The useful comparison is between the support needed to make music and the support missing from everyday intimacy. Those are competing measures of progress, even when both lives occupy the same city.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

A new bass player lets the Black Stones replace Ren Honjo and re-form. The arrival matters as a change in what the band can actually do: ambition now has a working lineup behind it. Komatsu has no equivalent repair to her situation. Shoji is working late and giving her little attention, while her job offers no obvious satisfaction. The contrast makes a band replacement more than personnel trivia. A practical vacancy can be filled; dissatisfaction inside a relationship cannot be solved merely by assembling the right number of people.
