The Forest of Death, and a book that is half of a fight rather than a fight. Chapters 46 to 54 drop the surviving teams into a sealed forest with five days to reach its center, and Team 7 runs into Orochimaru early in the forest. The fighting that follows runs on into Vol. 7, and the volume closes with Sakura holding a position she cannot hold. This is also where our own catalog used to put the end of season 1, and that was wrong: season 1 ends on chapter 61, seven chapters past the back cover of this one. Viz lists 192 pages at $11.99, and 3-in-1 book 2 closes here with Vols. 4 and 5.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Orochimaru is the first opponent the series does not allow anyone to beat. Naruto engages him and is quickly put down, and the counter is not a defeat in combat but a seal: the fox's chakra is shut off, which removes the one escalation the story has leaned on twice already. Sasuke keeps fighting in his place and takes away the Cursed Seal of Heaven, branded on him by an enemy who then walks off rather than finish. That mark is the thread this volume exists to start, and it is still open at the end of Vol. 12. The last third belongs to Sakura, the only member of Team 7 still conscious, guarding two unconscious teammates from Orochimaru's followers with nothing that reliably works. Team 10 reaches her before the question is settled, and chapter 54, 'Sakura and Ino', is the reunion and not the fight those two eventually have. The book stops mid-rescue.
