Eleven chapters of one continuous fight, and the last point at which the anime and the books stay in step before the anime takes a long detour. Chapters 658 to 668 are Madara against everyone left standing. Shippuden season 18 ends at chapter 662, the fifth of the eleven chapters here, and season 19, episodes 394 to 413, then adapts nothing new: twenty anime-original episodes about a Chunin Exam held after Part I. Season 20 picks the manga up again at chapter 663, the sixth chapter in this book, so a viewer coming from either season starts inside this volume rather than at the next one. The fight does not finish here and does not finish in the book after it. Viz lists 192 pages at $11.99, and this volume carries eleven chapters against the ten in each of the three before it.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

Madara takes everything. He absorbs Hashirama's chakra, pulls the tailed beasts back into the sealing statue, and extracting Kurama nearly kills Naruto: Sakura performs CPR on him, Gaara carries him, and the Yin half Minato meant to give him is stolen by Black Zetsu first. Sasuke is put down as well, alongside the Second Hokage. What the book ends on is Guy, who decides to open the Eighth Gate of Death against Madara knowing what it costs. The series gives its last unassisted human effort to a taijutsu specialist from Part I. A reader who stops at this volume stops on that decision and never sees what it buys.
