- Season 20: Infinite Tsukuyomi Activated / Jiraiya's Ninja Scroll / Itachi's Story 「無限月読・発動の章 / 自来也忍法帳 / イタチ真伝篇」 ep. 414–458; Season 21: Origin of Ninshu / Naruto and Sasuke 「忍宗の起源 / ナルトとサスケの章」 ep. 459–479
Season 20 of Shippuden stops one chapter short of the end of this book, which is the most awkward seam in the English run. Its forty-five episodes, 414 to 458, cover chapters 663 to 678, and 678 is the tenth of the eleven chapters here. Season 21 then opens on chapter 679, this book's last. A viewer who watched to episode 458 is buying the volume for one chapter, and a viewer who has started season 21 has already been shown it. Chapters 669 to 679 run from Guy's fight with Madara to the chapter the adaptation held over. Viz lists Box Set 3 at 6,688 pages for the twenty-four volumes it states as 49 to 72, which between them total 4,680, and gives no explanation for the gap.

Two things happen here that the series cannot walk back. Guy opens the Eighth Gate and keeps up with Madara: chapter 669 is titled 'The Eight Inner Gates Formation!!' and chapter 672 'Night Guy!!'. Meanwhile, in a dream, the Sage of Six Paths hands Naruto and Sasuke his own chakra and names them the reincarnations of his sons Ashura and Indra, which retro-fits a bloodline onto a rivalry the series had run on character since Part I. Madara takes Obito's Rinnegan, activates the Infinite Tsukuyomi in chapter 677 and puts the planet inside an illusion. Then Black Zetsu stabs Madara in the back, and in the last chapter what stands up is Kaguya Otsutsuki. The anime cutting immediately before that chapter is the clearest measure of how much weight it carries. A reader who stops at this volume stops one chapter into a different story.
