Season 21: Origin of Ninshu / Naruto and Sasuke 「忍宗の起源 / ナルトとサスケの章」 ep. 459–479

Viz prints this one at 208 pages against the 192 each of the previous ten carries, and the extra length goes to a fight the series had not prepared for. Chapters 680 to 690 take on the enemy introduced in the last chapter of Vol. 70, and they are the stretch in which all four of Team 7 have something distinct to do in the same fight rather than standing behind Naruto and Sasuke. Shippuden season 21, episodes 459 to 479, covers chapters 679 to 700, so the anime runs through this book and the final one without another break. Two threads open since Part I are closed inside these chapters, and both belong in the section below. The last volume follows two months later at the same $11.99.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

Obito dies here, properly, taking an attack meant for Team 7 after Sakura and his own eye technique have retrieved Sasuke from the dimension Kaguya dropped him into. He wills the ambition he never got to Naruto and gives what is left of his power to Kakashi, who fights the rest of the battle with both Mangekyo Sharingan working: the teacher from Part I gets his peak at the very end of the series and holds it for one fight. Kaguya is sealed by the four of them together. What the volume is really for is the correction it makes to its own cast list. For most of Part II the answer to any problem has been Naruto or Sasuke, and Kaguya is beaten because Sakura is there to move people and Kakashi is there to land a hit. The series spends its last full battle arguing with the shape it gave itself.
