Ten elimination matches held because too many teams passed, and the least essential book of the first twelve. Chapters 64 to 72 exist for an administrative reason: seven teams of three cleared the Forest of Death, far more than a public final can hold, so a knockout round nobody had planned is inserted. Ten matches are scheduled, which accounts for twenty of the twenty-one applicants. The result is a run of short fights whose job is to reduce a number. Two of them matter to the rest of the story and the remainder is scheduling, so this is a setup book for Vols. 9 and 10 rather than a reason on its own to buy the run. Viz lists 192 pages at $11.99, and 3-in-1 book 3 holds it with Vols. 7 and 9.

Two matches carry the volume, and the honest position is that the other eight are logistics. Sasuke goes first and wins with Lions Barrage, using neither the Sharingan nor the Cursed Seal. That he wins without them is the interesting part: the story is checking whether Sasuke is anything without borrowed power, and the answer it gives is yes, which makes everything after it harder rather than easier. The second is Sakura against Ino Yamanaka, a draw the series has been setting up since chapter 54 and that neither of them wants. Ino ends the book inside Sakura's head, using the Yamanaka mind transfer to make Sakura concede in her own voice, and the match is unfinished when the volume stops. Chapter 68 is called 'Blood of the Uchiha' and chapter 66 'Sakura's Advice', which is the book marking its own two exhibits. Everything between them is the exam getting from twenty-one people down to a bracket.
