Nine of the ten chapters here finish a prison break, and the tenth starts a war. That makes the anime boundary in this book the least convenient in the stretch: season 13 ends at chapter 550, the ninth chapter, and four of its episodes, 453 to 456, adapt nothing from the manga, while season 14 opens at chapter 551, the last chapter printed here. A viewer arriving from Impel Down is buying 208 pages for one chapter of new material and should order Vol. 57 alongside it. A reader working through the books has no such problem: the escape runs straight out of Vol. 55, and the volume ends on chapter 551, 'Whitebeard of the Four Emperors'.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Marineford works because the book before it spends its length making the escape cost something, and this is that book. Bon Clay stays behind at the gate to hold it open so that the others can leave, and chapter 548, which gives the volume its English title, is called 'Thank You' for him. Blackbeard walks into the prison, chapter 543 is titled 'Straw Hat and Blackbeard', and he holds Magellan off. Luffy, who has every reason to fight him over Portgas D. Ace, leaves instead: the series declining a confrontation it has been arranging. Then the closing chapters state what the war is actually about. Portgas D. Ace is not being executed as a commander of Whitebeard's crew but as the son of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Everything in the four volumes after this one follows from that being true in public.
