Season 17: Dressrosa ep. 629–746

Chapters 712 to 721, and the volume where the scattered halves of the Dressrosa plan start finding one another. Sanji is in the hands of one of Doflamingo's officers, Law tries to leave the island with Caesar and meets an Admiral instead, Usopp acquires an army of very small people who believe he is their general, and Luffy fights through the third block of the tournament. The threads converge and none of them concludes. This is the part of the arc that reads better collected than it did weekly: serialized, it was a long run of cutting between half a dozen groups; in one sitting, it is the book where the geography of the island becomes legible. The anime's seventeenth season covers chapters 699 to 801, which takes in everything here. It runs 208 pages and lists at $11.99.

'Dressrosa's Forgotten' is chapter 717 and the volume's title, and it is the arc telling the reader what the toys are: every living toy on the island was once a person. The one-legged toy soldier who talks Franky into attacking the House of Toys is the smallest beat in the book and the one the rest of the arc rests on. Around it the pieces are set. Violet, one of Doflamingo's officers, is talked into defecting by Sanji; Doflamingo goes back on the resignation; Fujitora, an Admiral, stops Law leaving with Caesar; and Rebecca enters Block D to open booing, because the grandfather the crowd hates was the king Doflamingo replaced ten years ago. Luffy wins Block C against Chin Jao, an old pirate whose grudge is with Garp rather than with him. The volume is set-up, and it is the set-up that makes the second half of Dressrosa work.
