Season 17: Dressrosa ep. 629–746

This is a book made entirely of middles: no opening, no ending, four operations running at once. Chapters 732 to 742 cut between an infiltration of the toy factory aimed at one of Doflamingo's officers, Franky holding the door against another, the final round of the tournament with the Flame-Flame Fruit on the line, and a flashback to how Rebecca's father became the island's undefeated gladiator. Nothing closes, and the book stops mid-operation. What it has in its favor is size: at 232 pages no One Piece volume runs longer, and Viz charges the same $11.99 it charges for the short ones. Everything here falls inside season 17, which covers chapters 699 to 801.

The decisive blow of the arc is a facial expression, and it is worth deciding in advance whether that is a problem. Sugar has to be knocked out for any of the plan to work, the Tontattas cannot get near her, and what finally does it is Usopp, stuck in Trebol's web and unable to move, pulling a face bad enough to make her faint. Ten years of occupation come undone because the crew's coward did the only thing still available to him. The rest is groundwork: Kyros goes from criminal to captain of the royal guard and marries Viola's sister Scarlet, which completes Rebecca's parentage; Cavendish turns out to carry a second self called Hakuba that clears a tournament block while he sleeps; and Diamante fights the four finalists at once, with the Flame-Flame Fruit on the back of a fighting fish. Collected, the Sugar sequence is a setup paid off in the next book. Weekly, it was a gag on a cliffhanger.
