Season 17: Dressrosa ep. 629–746

Nobody buys the Dressrosa run for this book, and that is worth saying before the one large thing in it gets used as a reason to. Chapters 743 to 752 are mostly repositioning: the toys have turned back and the island is in chaos, Doflamingo answers by sealing all of Dressrosa inside a cage of string and posting bounties on everyone who crossed him, one of his officers rebuilds the castle into a four-step tower, and the gladiators and pirates start climbing it while Zoro takes on the officer who built it. The reveal that matters is in the section below rather than here. Season 17 stops at chapter 801, well past this book. Viz lists 200 pages at $11.99, and the Omnibus Edition at $16.99 a book remains far the cheapest way through One Piece in English.

Lucy in the tournament final is not Luffy. It is Sabo, chief of staff of the Revolutionary Army and the third of the brothers, and he eats the Flame-Flame Fruit on the page and wins the tournament with it, which is the arc's answer to Ace: the power goes to the one still alive to use it. Chapter 748, 'Repaying the Debt', gives the book its name, and chapter 751 sets Sabo against Admiral Fujitora. Usopp takes the other half of the volume. Barely conscious, he is hailed as a god by the Tontattas, and Doflamingo responds by posting a 500 million berry bounty on him, the highest of the lot, to turn the island against the pirates. The birdcage is the arc's clock, and from here Dressrosa runs on a deadline that shrinks. All of that happens in a book otherwise made of people moving from one floor to another, which is the honest shape of an arc this long.
