Season 17: Dressrosa ep. 629–746

The front of this book is the flashback about the man who saved Trafalgar Law, and it is where Dressrosa stops being about an island. Chapters 764 to 775 finish what the previous volume began: an illness nobody will treat, six months on the road, and a devil fruit that two brothers want for opposite reasons. The present-day fight resumes in the back half, the officers holding the castle start going down one at a time, and Luffy is knocked deep inside it to find an old opponent waiting. Viz prints 232 pages, a length no volume in the series exceeds, at the same $11.99, and the book carries twelve chapters where ten is the usual count. Season 17 takes in chapters 699 to 801, so none of this is ahead of the anime.

Corazon is the reason the arc holds together. The hazing was a performance meant to drive Law out of the family, and Corazon had understood what his brother was after watching him kill their father. When Law gives his full name, Corazon tells him what the D means in practice: the people who carry it are enemies of the Celestial Dragons and of the World Government, and Doflamingo would kill him for the letter alone. That attaches a political meaning to the series' running initial and puts Law in the same set as Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace. Corazon steals the Op-Op Fruit to cure Law rather than to sell it, is caught, and tells his brother that Law has already eaten it. Doflamingo kills him. Chapter 766 is titled 'Smile', which is also the name of the artificial fruit the whole arc is being fought over, and the volume takes the word for itself.
