- Season 17: Dressrosa ep. 629–746
This book does not stand alone, opening in the middle of a climb and stopping in the middle of a flashback that the next volume finishes. Chapters 753 to 763 take the fight up the four steps of the rebuilt castle, then hand the back half to Trafalgar Law's childhood. The flashback is set in Flevance, a town that grew rich on beautiful white goods made from a metal that was poisoning everyone who lived there, and it runs past the last page here. A reader starting at this book will not know who is climbing or why the man at the top is worth the climb, so buy it inside the run from Vol. 71 to Vol. 78 or not at all. The anime covered this stretch in season 17, chapters 699 to 801. 200 pages, $11.99 at list.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The case for this volume is the flashback and not the climb. Law's illness is neither a curse nor a devil fruit: Flevance grew rich on a white lead that accumulated over generations until children were born already dying. A boy with three years left joins the Doflamingo family, and is hazed hardest by Corazon, the captain's brother. The present-day chapters do their work around it. Kyros reaches Rebecca after Diamante has already cornered her, Kin'emon finds Kanjuro, Sugar is frightened back into unconsciousness by Usopp and Kanjuro together, and Luffy and Law finally stand in front of Doflamingo. The climax of the arc stops dead to explain a childhood, which is either the best decision in Dressrosa or the reason Dressrosa runs as long as it does. The volume does not settle between those readings.
